India vs Australia, 4th Test: India beat Australia, win series 2-1

                           

Dharamsala: India defeated Australia by 8 wickets to win the win fourth and final Test to complete what has been a fantastic home season for Indian cricket. The win in the final Test also powered India to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

KL Rahul brought up his sixth fifty (51*) of the series while Ajinkya Rahane, who was captaining the side in Virat Kohli’s absence, scored a quickfire 38 off 27 balls as India brushed off Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara’s dismissal to dash Australia’s tiny hopes at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium.

India pushed Australia out of the contest as the bowlers put up their hands and dismissed Steve Smith and Co for a paltry total of 137. A first-innings lead of 32 runs meant that India were set a 106-run target to bag the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) venue. With the Indian openers – Murali Vijay and KL Rahul – knocking off 19 of 106 runs without much fuss, the hometeam was expected to win the match comfortably.

While Ravindra Jadeja was the star of the show with bat and ball on Day 3, it was Umesh Yadav, who set up Australian second-innings collapse with a hostile spell of pace bowling. Australia, for their misfortune, failed to cope with Umesh’s bowling and Bhuvneshwar Kumar rattling Steve Smith’s stumps made the matters worse for the touring side.

While Virat Kohli was left out of action in Dharamsala Test following a shoulder injury in Ranchi Test, Ajinkya Rahane did a fantastic job as a stand-in skipper in a series-decider. In what was his first match as Test skipper, the team did well and he must have been a happy man as the team crossed the finish line with a thumping win on Tuesday.

• He fits right into BJP's rainbow social formation going beyond caste calculations only.
• He has worked for the Ram Mandir movement and is a Hindutva ideologue.
• Minus point:
• However, Maurya has no administrative experience, and is a first-time MP. Also, there are a number of court cases against him, some of which are criminal cases, which might work against Modi’s anti-corruption crusader image.

The Union home minister is easily the tallest leader of UP and is a reliable Thakur face.

• Plus points:
• Rajnath Singh has been a chief minister twice before, so administrative experience is a big strength. In addition, he has also been the BJP national president, which adds immense organisational skills to his kitty.

• However, Singh might not be interested in shifting base from the Centre, where he’s the number two in the Union Cabinet.

He’s a three-time Lok Sabha MP who has immense administrative skills.

Plus point:

• Thrice elected to Lok Sabha, Sinha has both organisation and legislative experience. In addition, his clean image is a plus.

Minus points:

• He comes from the numerically insignificant Bhumihar caste, and may not add to BJP's rainbow social coalition.
• Also, he’s not a very dynamic leader, and may not be a glamorous choice for the post of the UP chief minister.

• Sharma’s administrative and organisational skills are no secret, and is also close to both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
• In addition, he’s associated with the RSS and is close to the Sangh. Hardly any corruption cases against him and that makes him a strong candidate.

Minus point:

However, his sphere of influence limited to Noida and he has already been embroiled in controversies, particularly in his suggestion to grade artists, or shrouding the deceased murder accused, part of the lynchmob that killed Akhlaq in September 2015, with the national flag.

Dinesh Sharma

He’s the mayor of Lucknow and BJP’s national vice president.

Plus point:

• Known for his proximity with the party high command, and it was on his invitation that PM Modi had come to Lucknow’s Ramlila Maidan last year.

Minus point:

• Not known outside Lucknow and hasn’t won any big election.
